Call for Papers 1/2023: Täter, Mitläufer, and the responsibility for evil

The topic of post-World War II traumatic memories in Germany finds expansive room in the historical and philosophical debate around the concept of guilt and responsibility, and it is forced to confront the inexplicable indifference and apathy of the German people during and (immediately) after the hegemony of the Nazi regime. This apparent "national socialist anhedonia" ascribed by Arendt to the regime’s hierarchs including Eichmann, still leads the scholar community to question the responsibility for the Shoah. Despite the rich testimonial repertoire bequeathed by the Häftlinge, the survivors of the concentration and extermination camps of the Third Reich, there are still few studies devoted to the figures of the hierarchs and the reasons prompting individual political figures to concert the Final Solution (Reich, 1933; Browning, 1992; Lifton, 1986; Milgram, 1974; Spitz, 2005; Zimbardo, 2007). At the same time, the investigation of the merely passive attitude of their supporters and the reaction/non-reaction of subsequent generations has yet to be explored. The Call intends to offer an alternative viewpoint to that witnessed by the Opfer (victims) by focusing on the actors of regime policies – the Täter (executioners) – and the "passive" followers – the Mitläufer. Beginning with Hannah Arendt's accounts, this Call aims to gather proposals that embrace this perspective, not limiting the inquiry to the field of Germanistics, but opening the discussion and comparison to other geographical areas that have experienced repressive governmental institutions, the cause of large-scale violence and social abuse. The hope is to host within the first 2023 issue of the journal DIVE-IN. An International Journal on Diversity and Inclusion cross-cutting proposals sharing the common thread of trauma and memory, which can reread a cultural past dominated by social injustices through the singular testimony of those who perpetrated them or experienced them only passively without opposing them, including the transgenerational dimension.

Täter, Mitläufer e la responsabilità del male

Il tema delle memorie traumatiche del secondo dopoguerra in Germania trova ampio spazio nel dibattito storico e filosofico attorno al concetto di colpa e responsabilità, costretto a confrontarsi con l’inspiegabile indifferenza e apatia del popolo tedesco durante e (immediatamente) dopo l’egemonia del regime nazista. Quest’apparente "anedonia nazionalsocialista" ascritta da Arendt ai gerarchi del regime fra cui Eichmann, induce tutt’oggi la comunità scientifica a interrogarsi sulla responsabilità della Shoah. Malgrado il ricco repertorio testimoniale lasciato in eredità dagli Häftlinge, i sopravvissuti ai campi di concentramento e sterminio del Terzo Reich, ancora pochi sono gli studi dedicati alle figure dei gerarchi e ai motivi capaci di spingere singole personalità politiche a concertare di comune accordo la Soluzione Finale (Reich, 1933; Browning, 1992; Lifton, 1986; Milgram, 1974; Spitz, 2005; Zimbardo, 2007) così com’è ancora da approfondire l’indagine sull’atteggiamento meramente passivo dei loro sostenitori e sulla reazione/non reazione delle generazioni successive. L’intento è quello di offrire un punto di vista alternativo rispetto a quello testimoniato dalle Opfer (vittime) focalizzando l’attenzione sugli attori delle politiche di regime – i Täter (carnefici) – e sui seguaci "passivi" – i Mitläufer. A partire dalle testimonianze di Hannah Arendt, la presente call mira a raccogliere proposte che abbraccino questa prospettiva, non limitando l’indagine al campo della germanistica, ma aprendo la discussione e il confronto ad altre aree geografiche che abbiano fatto esperienza di istituzioni governative repressive, causa di violenze e abusi sociali su ampia scala. L’auspicio è quello di ospitare all’interno del primo numero del 2023 della rivista DIVE-IN. An International Journal on Diversity and Inclusion proposte trasversali accomunate dal filo conduttore di trauma e memoria, che sappiano rileggere un passato culturale dominato da ingiustizie sociali attraverso la testimonianza singolare di chi le ha perpetrate o le ha vissute solo passivamente senza opporsi, includendo anche la dimensione transgenerazionale.

Täter, Mitläufer und die Verantwortung des Bösen

Traumatische Erinnerungen sind in Deutschland nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg ein zentrales Thema im Rahmen der historischen und philosophischen Debatte um die Begriffe 'Schuld' und 'Verantwortung', welche sich mit der unerklärlichen Gleichgültigkeit und Apathie der deutschen Bevölkerung während des Nazi-Regimes und in der (unmittelbaren) Nachkriegszeit auseinandersetzen muss. Diese scheinbare 'nationalsozialistische Anhedonie', die Arendt den NS-Hierarchen, einschließlich Eichmann zuschreibt, stellt die wissenschaftliche Gemeinschaft noch heute vor die Frage nach der Verantwortung für die Shoah. Trotz der reichen Hinterlassenschaften der Häftlinge, der Überlebenden der Konzentrations- und Vernichtungslager im Dritten Reich, haben sich bisher nur wenige Studien mit den Figuren der NS-Machthaber und deren Beweggründen, die sie zum gemeinsamen Entschluss zur sogenannten 'Endlösung der Judenfrage' veranlasst haben, befasst (Reich 1933; Browning, 1992; Lifton, 1986; Milgram, 1974; Spitz, 2005; Zimbardo, 2007); was die lediglich passive Haltung vieler Deutscher sowie die Reaktion bzw. Nichtreaktion der nachfolgenden Generationen betrifft, sind weiterhin viele Fragen offen. In dieser Ausgabe soll eine alternative Sichtweise zu derjenigen der Opfer geboten werden, die sich auf die politischen Akteure des NS-Regimes (die Täter) und ihre 'passiven' Mitläufer konzentriert. Ausgehend von den Texten Hannah Arendts werden Vorschläge begrüßt, die diese Perspektive einbeziehen und die Untersuchung nicht nur auf deutsche Zusammenhänge beschränken, sondern die Diskussion und den Vergleich mit anderen historisch-geografischen Kontexten eröffnen, in denen staatliche Institutionen repressiv gehandelt haben und zu Urhebern von Gewalt und sozialem Missbrauch in großem Ausmaß geworden sind. Ziel der ersten Ausgabe von 2023 der Zeitschrift DIVE-IN. An International Journal on Diversity and Inclusion ist es, transversale Beiträge zu sammeln, die unter dem gemeinsamen Nenner 'Trauma und Erinnerung' eine von sozialen Ungerechtigkeiten dominierte kulturelle Vergangenheit neu zu lesen versuchen, besonders durch die singulären Zeugnisse derer, die diese Ungerechtigkeiten begangen oder nur passiv, ohne Widerstand zu leisten, erlebt haben. Dabei soll auch die transgenerationale Dimension mit einbezogen werden.
